Last week, we wondered if any Super Bowl ads would be #SuperBold. With most ads being released online before the big game, few truly surprised us. Check out our picks for the commercials that went above and beyond this year.

Storytelling

This year’s game saw an over-abundance of inspirational ads attempting to tug at our hearstrings: Microsoft’s What Can You Do? with Estella Pyfrom’s Brilliant Bus, Always’ #LikeAGirl campaign, McDonald’s love currency, Budweiser’s “Lost Dog”. But it was Dove Men + Care’s reminder of the importance of fatherhood that won our hearts.

Comedy

For nine years, Doritos has been crowd-sourcing its Super Bowl commercials, making them one of the ads to look for during the big game. “Middle Seat” and “When Pigs Fly” were good, and Subway’s Tough Dodger commercial got us to chuckle, none were as funny as Danny Trejo starring in Snickers’ version of “The Brady Bunch.” And who doesn’t love a little Steve Buscemi?

Product We’d Actually Use

If we didn’t build our own websites, we’d hitch a ride on the Wix bandwagon. Farve and Carve? Classic. And if Bud Light could build a life-size replica of PacMan outside every bar, they’d have customers for life. But it was Clash of Clans’ spot with take-no-prisoners Liam Neeson that caught our attention. “You will regret the day you crossed AngryNeeson52.”

Ultimate #SuperBold

While some brands fell flat this year, one commercial really kicked it up a notch by going all out. Loctite famously spent it’s entire marketing budget on its 30 second ad featuring everyday people celebrating the joy of glue. It was a big risk and only time will tell if it paid off.
