Social media may be at the heart of your strategy. It may not. In 2014, social affects your marketing regardless. This week leaders from all industries – agencies, brands, and independents – gather again to discuss ways to leverage social in marketing.

Social Media Week, a global conference of industry leaders, kicked off its Fall 2014 #SMWchicago event on Monday. Sparkfactor’s team (George Lowe, Russell Lord, and Andrea Garcia) came with our ears to the ground for insights to help push our client’s business forward during holiday and Q1 of 2015. Here are the top takeaways from the first half of the conference.

The Next Generation of Social Creativity: Marc Landsberg shared his vision of the future of brand marketing with an explosion of creativity, ideas coming from everywhere, and focusing more on the brand voice as communicated through the lens of various social media. We couldn’t agree more about reaching people where they are, being agile, and not being afraid to find discrete, channel specific ways to promote connections between brands to consumers.

A secret for personal users: use Pinterest to store all of your bookmarks. You’ll have them at the tip of your fingers whether you’re on your phone, tablet, or computer.

The Field Guide Live panel: This panel put some of Chicago’s most active community managers in the hot seat to find out how they succeed at managing various social media while also staying sane. While they admitted it’s rough sometimes, they all agreed an editorial calendar helped them, and their coworkers, post content their followers enjoy, while also leaving room to respond to customer service issues.
